Re: Chicago area

The past few days, I've now gotten FOUR messages about channel changes. All about specialty non-English language channels! Do they think CSN-HD and TNT-HD are so well known they don't have to tell anybody??

Re: Chicago area

Any idea when we can expect WCIU in HD? I know that they have it on satellite? I'm getting sick of having to watch the Cubs lose in SD smile

Re: Chicago area

Here in Schaumburg, saw a scroll on the TV Guide channel that the analog versions of HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax (channels 4, 17 and 97) will be dropped on August 23rd.

Re: Chicago area

Messages today of several changes coming September 27th:
LOGO, MTV's gay/lesbian channels will be on channel 143.
OLN is moving from digital to analog 76 (!)
VH1 Soul is moving from the Digital Plus package to Digital Classic.
VH1 Country is moving from the Digital Classic package to Digital Plus.

Also, I thought HBO/Showtime/Cinemax (4/17/98) were supposed to be dropped from analog on the 23rd, but they are still there using the TV's tuner (the cable box never even listed those channels.)

Re: Chicago area

I'm keeping my eye on your changes, Andy, because what happens there seems to find its way here after a few months.

You're getting these messages on your DVR?  All I ever get in my DVR messages are PPV announcements.

They haven't even made any mention that the majority of the channels are now digital.  You'd think that's something they'd want to tout, since DirecTV gives them an "ad reaming" every once and a while about "Digital Cable? Most of the channels on digital cable are not even digital."

Re: Chicago area

Most of the time, the messages are just ads for Digital Phone and stuff. I still remember once getting a message about Comcast job openings....in New Jersey!!

  Got another message this morning:
LMN (Lifetime Movie Network) is moving from Digital Premier to Digital Plus on 9/27. It'll still be available to Digital Premier subscribers until November. Digital Premier is a secondary package that is added on TOP of Digital Classic or Plus.

Looks like the "Messages" feature on the 6412 is very underused by my local Comcast office.  Maybe corporate figures if they send messages to one of us, he'll inform the rest of us smile

In the 13 months that I have had the 6412, I have never recieved a single messgae from my Adelphia. I guess the execs were using the money for messages elsewhere. cool

Re: Chicago area

Two new channels were added: 223 is WWME (not certain what it is, but it's airing old TV programs.) 248 is WFBT, which I think is broadcast channel 23, mostly ethnic programming (Greek, Chinese, Korean, Polish, etc..)

Re: Chicago area

The only MSGS. I've seen have been for PPV, WWE, & now they're touting certain new movies available On-Demand.  The only channel change msg. I saw was a few months ago, when Comcast removed the only remaining analogue HBO, making it exclusively a digital package.  Oh, & maybe they should have used a blue LED for the MSG. indicator, on the DCT DVRs.  I remember waking up in the middle of the night to see the red LED on the right side.  Mostly still asleep, I thought I had received a MSG., & was dizzily confused thinking the MSG. LED was on the right side, unlike my DCT2224.  Of course, the next morning I realized I had scheduled a dead of night recording.  And now, seeing two bright red LEDS is momentarily confusing, at least to me.

Re: Chicago area

I made a big Excel spreadsheet listing all the cable channels, frequencies, etc... here in Schaumburg, IL. It makes for interesting way to find out things. Others can use it as a template if they want to figure out how their area's system is set up:

Re: Chicago area

The analog HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax were dropped 10/4.

Logo was added on channel 143.

PBS Kids Sprout will be added as 127 on 10/26.
MoviePlex will be added as 149 on 10/26.

I believe all are part of Digital Classic.

Some of the Spanish language channels in the 600's will be changing on the 26th, too.

Encore movies have been added to OnDemand. Available if you are a Digital Plus or better subscriber.

Re: Chicago area

For at least 3rd time, virtually all of the expanded basic channels have frozen or gone blank. This is using my bedroom TV with it's built-in tuner, so it's not  a cable box issue.

Re: Chicago area

Anyone else having channel problems lately?

I have been unable to get several channels today (ex: The Weather Channel) on either settop box--the regular digital one and the DVR. It comes in fine on the analog TV set that's hooked directly to cable.

Also, the DVR box pixelation has been getting so bad that channels are virtually unwatchable and some recordings are unusable--totally garbled (pixelation and no sound). I'm thinking this is a separate problem with the DVR box, but would love to know if anyone is experiencing anything similar. I'm in Highland Park.

Comcast says there are no outages or reported problems. Earliest they can come out is Saturday night.

Thanks!

Re: Chicago area

Sounds like you're having signal problems in the digital range (most likely, you're getting a digital simulcast of TWC and the rest of your basic channels through your STBs so comparing them to what you're getting through your analog cable is not going to help).

What are your diagnostic readings like?

Re: Chicago area

Hi, Frank.

For the channels that aren't working (such as TWC), on the d04 InBand Status screen, it's swapping back and forth between

SNR: INVALID
AGC: INVALID

and

SNR: 26.2 dB (or so)  POOR
AGC: 99%                 POOR

Nothing shows up on the d06 Current Channel Status Screen for any of the items.

The other screens look pretty normal...same as for the working channels.

Re: Chicago area

You've got a signal problem, at least with the frequencies that carry those channels.  Either too many splits, or a splitter that's not letting the higher frequency through, or a break in a line somewhere, or any number of other issues.

My advice would be to get a coupler and a long, good cable.  Connect Comcast's line to your house (the one going from the pole to the junction box) directly to the DVR and check those levels again.  If they're suddenly good, you know the problem is in your own wiring somewhere (not Comcast's problem).

If the signal coming from the pole is that bad, it's Comcast's problem (and good luck having them find it - took me months to get them to fix it and I knew where in my neighborhood the problem was).

Re: Chicago area

At midnight last night (6/23), Fox SportsNet Chicago shut down. After losing WhiteSox, Blackhawks and Bulls coverage to Comcast SportsNet two years ago, they were pretty much reduced to airing poker tournaments and similar 'sports'.

FSN Chicago started out as SportsVision in the early 80's carrying WhiteSox and Bulls games, broadcasting on channel 60 using scrambled video and audio. With the Chicago area being wired for cable, they became a cable channel. A few years ago, it was sold to Fox.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fox_Sports_Net

Let's hope they use the channel space to carry a few new digital channels. WCIU-DT is high on the list as they carry some Cubs and Sox games and went HD about 2 months ago. Other multicast channels like 'The Tube Music Network' (WGN 9.2) could be nice. http://www.thetubetv.com/

I sure hope that they would add WCIU-DT, watching the Sox games on WCIU is just plan awful.
