I got the impression from your postings that yours were already remapped, even though the process was still ongoing, and more channels being digitized.  Is that true?

Correct.

Digital STB = Channel 7 is Digital

No STB/Analog STB = Channel 7 is Analog

Some systems maybe testing the Digital counterpart on a higher channel to be moved/remapped later.

Those with QAM tuners will see everything "in the clear" that is broadcast up to the QAM tuners limitations.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

There are a few channels now being digitally simulcast here in Schaumburg, IL:
3: Comcast Network
13: Schaumburg Village
15: Public Access
24: Library Cable Network
26: ARTS
30: TV Guide Channel
96: Leased Access

All are way up at 825MHz (beyond analog 125!!) The Dolby Digital symbol is currently only showing on tuner 1 again. It'll probably fix itself in a few days, as it tends to do.

TVGC is a bit better than before. Much less pixelation on the scrolling text.

Nope.  That is just a CSR/marketing myth.  Any channel anyplace can be Analog or Digital (with a Digital STB).

In the Analog days, with an Analog STB, channels 1 through 99 were all Analog.  But now (and for a long time now) some channels such as HBO and Showtime are Digitally simulcast.

For example:  On my system channel 14 is HBO and channel 32 is Showtime.  On my Analog STB those channels are Analog, but on my Digital STB they are Digital.

So, as you can see, Digital can be on any channel above or below 100.

My 101 weatherscan is still analog.  It's 120 on my cable-ready TVs.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

This morning in the Center City Philadelphia system, ALL channels are being digital simulcast EXCEPT channel 12 (WHYY, PBS) and channel 68 (AZN TV). I don't know why these two channels are still analog.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

Still (decidedly un-)glorious analog on most basic cable channels out here in Lower Bucks.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

OK.  Sometime last week, a lot of the more common basic analog channels switched to digital simulcast here in Lower Bucks (Yay!).  The weird thing is, these channels do NOT have the Dolby Digital logo when you tune to them like the other channels do.  What gives?

I've noticed that USA, FX and Comedy Central are now digitally simulcast.  I haven't gone through yet to make a list because it would involve turning off the box and going to the current channel menu selection in the diagnostic menu to verify.

Any clues as to why these channels would not show DD on the "Info" screen while the other simulcast channels (Local channels, etc) still do?

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

You're going to have to break your Cardinal Rule and turn your box off.  Once you power it up you will see the DD on all DS'd channels.

I did that on Friday, actually.  Once I started watching my recording from the night before of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and saw that it was digital, I tuned the box to FX.  No DD icon.  So I turned the box off to check the diag screen.  It showed QAM 256, verifying digital simulcast.  I turned the box back on (of course, no picture or sound present) and started watching the recording again. When the recording was done, it tuned back to live TV on FX and there was still no DD icon.  I started tuning around and was getting the DD on all the "older" digitally simulcast channels (CSPAN, ABC, NBC, etc).  Just not the "newer" ones.

Are you getting the DD on USA, FX, etc?

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I guess the next step is a complete power cycle.  Not worth it since they are DD anyway.  All of my Digitally Simulcasted channels indicate DD.  I'm hoping that by the next week or two we will be nearly 100% complete here.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

Yeah - no plans to unplug.  I was just looking for it as a convenience so that I can tell at a glance which ones are simulcast at this point.

They all look pretty great, by the way, much better than DirecTV's versions did when I had DirecTV (near the end, anyway.  Only HD beats what DirecTV looked like when I first had it).  The only one that looks a little shaky is WPVI (6ABC).  The colors are way too saturated.  It looks like one of those colorized versions of a black and white movie.

I agree.  Comcast's DS'd channels (as a whole) look much better than DirecTV's.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

Are you certain you are on Tuner 1 when viewing the channels? There is a long-time quirk where tuner 2 will not show the DD for a few days.

Yes, because it is showing up on the "older" DS channels.  It's not showing up on the "newer" DS channels (USA, FX, TNT, etc).

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I'm 100% digital now in South Jersey/Gloucester Co.  I only have a few like TVGuide Channel, WT-TV Washington Twp Television and a local channel which doesn't matter to me.  Now I'm just wating for the DCT-700 to come this way! smile ... I went ADS last night.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I'm in Union County, NJ, and I'm puzzled.

I have an LG LST-3410A DVR, which has a clear-QAM cable tuner.  With this device I can see that Comcast in my area is now digitally transmitting a ton of services that were previously available only in analog.  I haven't taken the time to enumerate them all, but there are dozens of them, possibly all the channels that still remain on analog.  (I counted 48 and I didn't find them all.)  These are not in the list of digitally-simulcast channels for Union/Verona that Mark last posted to this thread (unless a later post was lost after the hack--I haven't visited here for a while and was sad to learn of the vandalism).

As far as I can tell, none of these recently-added digital channels are being tuned digitally by the Comcast digital cable boxes that I have (a DCT6412 DVR and a DCT2000).  The diagnostic screens (as well as the very evident video noise) tell me that these are still being tuned from the analog signal.

Are we in some preliminary testing period before Comcast "throws the switch" and changes the channel maps for all the digital boxes to begin using the new signals?

Mark?

The crumminess of the A-to-D conversion on the 6412 is one of the things that's kept me from getting another one of them.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

The only thing I can say here is that if you have a QAM tuner then you will see everything broadcast "In the Clear".

As far as ADS goes.  You need a DCT700 to see ADS.  Maybe soon all STB's will be "mapped" to receive ADS.  Just not yet.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I've heard that the analogue to digital SD channel upconversion is much better on the DCT6412 phase 3 (the one w/ the HDMI port).  Also, what is ADS?

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

Has anyone else noticed that in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, most (if not all since I haven't checked them all) are coming in as digital signals now?  I only noticed because my DVR recently has had a lot of extra space due to the high compression of the digital signals.  Anyone know when this happened?

Not here in Schaumburg. The only DS channels so far are TVGuide and a few village/public-access channels, which occured a few months ago.
