Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I'm going to have to take another detailed look, but I'm pretty sure that we've got exactly nothing in DS around here yet.  I'd see the dolby logo on any DS channel if I hit "Info" while watching live, right?  If it's channels like HSN, I just may not have noticed because I never watch them except while "Surfing" past.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

The best ways in order:

1. The Diagnostic Menu - d04 In Band Status.  You will See QAM256.  Also d06 Current Channel Status will indicate Digital.

2. The Dolby Digital on the i-Guide is another but I have seen this not present at times on both tuners.   So this to me is unreliable.  It should indicate DD on your HT Receiver if connected.

3. The picture should look remarkably clear.

I know about the diag menu smile  Gotta turn off the box to get there, and that's always my last resort for anything.

Yeah, it's a pain:  change channel, turn off box and quickly press select, press the down button repeatedly to get to d04, press select to see if the channel is analog or digital, press power to exit diag menu, press power to turn box back on, change channel again...

When I checked to see which channels were simulcast on my system, I manually went through the diag menu for every channel number between 2 and 100, using the buttons on the front of the 6412. It took about half an hour, and sitting that close to the screen, it got to the point that I could usually tell which channels were digital by looking at the picture before going into the menu, although a few of them fooled me.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I was flipping through the channels earlier trying to determine if I could tell a difference on any channels.  CMT looked amazing.  I decided to suck it up, turn off the box and check the d04 diag.  Sure enough: 256 QAM.

No DD symbol on the "Info" screen, so that's a bust.  I guess the only way I'll know is to check individual channels if I happen to be flipping past them and see they look good.

My HT always shows "DD" for every channel (analog and digital) viewed through the 6412 (except for when it shows Dolby Surround on 5.1 broadcasts of course), which makes sense because I'm connected digitally (optical) so the output is always digital.  The "Info" display should show "DD" when tuned to a digital channel because it should read the input.  I'm not clear on why it doesn't for these simulcast channels.

Perhaps for the digital simulcast channels the audio is still being transmitted from the head end as analog? Or, perhaps its PCM digital and not Dolby? Or, perhaps the iGuide software only looks to display DD for channels higher than 100?

The PCM digital is possible.  If it's being sent 256QAM, I'm not sure they can send the audio analog.  I doubt it.  Also, I've always gotten the DD on HBO, which is 16 on my system.  I'm assuming the box knows that it's also broadcast digitally and takes that digital signal and aliases it someway as 16 too.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I did a buffer test on one of the newly DS'd channels and I'm getting a whopping 125 minutes of buffer.  I like that! smile  Much better than the 45 minutes Analog has.

We do need a larger Hard Drive so we can get more than 15 minutes on HD though.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

Here in my new location, the Dolby Digital shows up on all simulcasted channels.  It did not in my old house, even though I was on the same Comcast system.  I'll work up a list later, but off the top of my head it looks like CN8 and everything CH 68 and above.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

I have to turn my box off when the DD or DD5.1 doesn't show up.  Gives me the opportunity to check Configuration settings.  One tuner never shows the DD anyway.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

Received a message from Comcast in Pleasanton, CA that all the PPV channels
were going to be going away in June sometime (17th?) and that we are being
directed to OnDemand.  I assume that means the amount of OnDemand content
will be going up significantly as it is quite paltry currently.

I post this here because I believe this is one way to make room for the
Digital Simulcast to be rolled out in the same timeframe in my area...

How are they frequency-wise? How many do they seem to be cramming into one analog space?

Yes, you should see your On Demand content significantly rise.  Once your system is part of the National Backbone and or by years end.

Yes, by removing one Analog channel they make room to Digitally Simulcast as many as sixteen Analog channels.

Re: Digital Simulcast Information: All Areas

Comcast subscribers with QAM tuners in Seattle have reported a large number of the analog channels appearing digitally as QAM 256, but so far none seem to be mapped through the stb.  Since I don't have a QAM tuner, it's just a rumor to me.

That is reasonable.  Once they are ready they will be remapped.
