Instant Neighborhood Idiot Check: Earth Hour 2008

If you look out your window for about two minutes starting at 7:59 PM your local time tonight, you'll get a quick and easy sampling of who the biggest idiots, hippies and wackos in your neighborhood are.  If their lights go out at 8PM and stay off for an hour, they're participating in Earth Hour.

Apparently, Earth Hour will somehow stop the sun from heating up the oceans and causing increased CO2 emissions.  I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it's like giving a mental patient something shiny to play with: If it makes them happy why not let them have it?

Who am I to argue.  It seems last year's Earth Hour worked, because this winter was the coldest since 2001, they're getting snow at the end of March in the Pacific Northwest, and Antartic ice levels are at highs not seen since the 1970s.

Prediction: In 2013, wackos will be urging us to turn on our lights for an extra hour on March 31 to heat things back up.  That won't do a damn thing, either.

Indeed, we do have snow in the Seattle area.  Coincidence?  I think not!  But I'm going to keep the lights on to help melt the snow.

(Isn't more CO2 good for plants?)

Re: Instant Neighborhood Idiot Check: Earth Hour 2008

My band will be playing...we need electricity. Sorry Earth people.

Actually , complete with guitar amps, keyboards, PA system, etc; we don't
apparently draw that much electricity.  We went to an oudoor farmer's market
to play, and they actually did not have a place for us to plug into. The city-worker
had a power inverter and said the bands plug into that and plug into a car.
After the electrician in our band was pretty certain we won't fry our equipment,
we did it , and it worked fine. The car we used didn't even have a dead
battery (as we all feared) when we were down, some 2 hrs later.
