Can't play recorded programs or use live buffer

Twice in the last week I've had a problem with my DCT3416 not being able to play recorded programs or use the buffer for live programs.  I can select the recordings but get a blank screen and the progress bar stays at 0.  With a live program I can only view it live or pause it -- no buffer use.  Pulling the plug restores everything to its normal state.  I think I'll swap it out as soon as feasible.

Re: Can't play recorded programs or use live buffer

It's possible there is some drive corruption. It will normally fix itself during bootup, but if it keeps reoccurring, your drive could be going bad.

As a last resort, you may want to consider the DVR HDD reset, which will reformat the drive (and lose ALL of your recordings and programming.)

I'll swap it out as soon as I don't need the recordings, so no reason to do a reset.

if you do this procedure it will NOT delete everything on the drive. It wil just reload firmware and it will fix your problem, just happened to me this weekend.

How do you know it will fix the problem?  A simple unplug/replug is a temporary fix, and you haven't waited long enough to know if the reset does any more than that.

Re: Can't play recorded programs or use live buffer

If this reset does not fix your problem, Then a new box is in order.  This problem has happened to me twice but doing the DVR Authorization and Factory Full Reset.  should fix your problem.  This procedure is not just a unplug and plug.

DVR Authorization and Factory Full Reset

WARNING: This will download and reinstall the DVR firmware and software. This SHOULD not erase your user settings or delete your stored recordings on the DVR. This is not guaranteed; proceed at your own risk.

   1. Unplug the power cord from the DVR.
   2. On the front of the DVR, press & hold the POWER & MENU buttons while plugging the power cord back into the DVR. The display should now read "boot".
   3. Release the POWER & MENU buttons.
   4. Press the UP or DOWN ARROW buttons on the DVR (not the remote) until you see "n dl" on the display.
   5. Press the OK/SELECT on the DVR to begin authorization & downloading of software, STB/DVR firmware from your cable headend. It could take up to 20 minutes to download the firmware, the software could take up to 2 hours depending on what software your cable provider has. You should see "n dl" in the LED display with a line moving in a square.
   6. After it completes this download the DVR will then reboot and begin to download the time settings for the clock along with your cable account info and settings. After this is done, it will begin to populate the Guide info. It could take up to 24 hours to fill in all 2 weeks of Guide info. Depending on your location, environmental variables and amount of users with digital cable or cable Internet, the download can take up to twice as long.
   7. If the display on your Motorola DVR displays only the number 0 after performing this process, it is in need of a reset by your cable provider. Call them and ask them to reset your box.

    * This procedure is not confirmed to work on the newer DCH-series DVRs. It does not work on Time Warner Cable's version 6416 DVR, which does not include "n dl" on the display.

Re: Can't play recorded programs or use live buffer

Well, let me know in a few weeks if it actually fixed the problem -- or more likely, if it didn't.  hmm

Re: Can't play recorded programs or use live buffer

I'm having the exact same problem with a 6416.

Is there another factory full reset procedure that will work for that model?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Well, it seemed to have healed itself in my case.  I don't recall any more details.  The resets for the 6416 and 3416 should be the same:  http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use … DVR/Resets

Re: Can't play recorded programs or use live buffer

I accidentally induced this problem again recently by turning off the DVR while it was playing a recording, so I'm sure it was a simple case of the drive or some software pointers getting corrupted.  (I was watching something unintelligible on BBC America and punched the box off to enable the CC -- forgetting for a moment that I was watching a recorded program!)  Unplug/plug fixed it, of course.
